WAR-TOWN made national news. And right out of the gate, Warner Robins found itself famous for a school shooting. The shooting at WAR-TOWN High School put this Middle Georgia community in front of a national audience—but if we’re going to talk about what happened, we’re going to have to talk about more than the shooting itself.
In Part One of this edition of Down Loaded Content, Author, Narrator & Fictional Character Daniel Louis Crumpton goes back to the beginning, revisiting his arrival in the fictional city of WAR-TOWN and more than three decades spent watching its people, politics, institutions, racial divisions and peculiar contradictions unfold. Because when tragedy strikes, blame comes quickly: parents, schools, police, politicians, culture, race, ideology—or simply whoever happens to occupy the other side. But what if the story isn’t as black and white as everyone wants it to be?
What if some of WAR-TOWN‘s loudest explanations for its problems have prevented its residents from examining the machinery underneath them? From racial narratives and community dysfunction to local politics, power and the curious phenomenon Daniel calls the “Melanin Switcheroo,” Part One begins pulling at the threads—and eventually finds itself standing at the doorstep of WAR-TOWN City Hall. And just when the trail begins pointing toward local government, Andrew Davidson—better known as “Mr. Warner Robins”—arrives on the scene with a finger of his own to point. There are plenty of places to find thoughts and prayers. This isn’t one of them.
