In this powerful episode, we take a deep dive into a shocking case of police brutality involving a Houston County Sheriff’s deputy and a veteran father with PTSD. Joy (@AutismMom_Joy) joins us to discuss the traumatic experience her family endured when her partner, DJ, was slammed onto a police cruiser while trying to explain that their nonverbal autistic son was in the vehicle. Instead of de-escalating, the deputy became more aggressive, escalating what should have been a routine stop into a traumatizing ordeal. This same deputy is also allegedly responsible for a prior stop that resulted in a child being permanently crippled. Cases like this highlight the urgent need for mandatory autism and mental health training for all law enforcement and first responders.
